Opacity and visible emissions are measured by transmissometers in accordance with nsps or New Source Performance Standards and SIPs or State Implementation Plans approved by the Environmental Air Pollution to protect and improve air quality. EPA or the Environmental Protection Agency often requires transmissometers or continuous opacity monitors sometimes known as coms or opacity meters in place of ve observations for opacity.
